Focus Group Discussion

Focus group discussion is a tool of acquiring feedbacks and responses about the new product/ new topics of surveys which allow companies wishing to develop, package, name, or test market a new product, to discuss, view, and/or test the new product and the topics.
In a focus group discussion, they brought together people from similar backgrounds or experiences to discuss a specific topic of interest to the investigator(s).

Purpose:

• To explore the range of opinions/views on a topic of interest.
• To collect a wide variety of local terms and expressions used to describe something.
• To explore meanings of survey findings that cannot be explained statistically.

Materials:

A range of materials including recorders, pictures to introduce topics for discussion, can be used. Recording the discussion has the advantage of being able to play it back and pick up main points after the discussion is over.

When to use Focus Group Discussion (FGD):

• Group Interaction: Richer responses and allow new and valuable thoughts to
emerge.
• Observation: Observe the respondent’s behaviors, attitudes, languages and feelings, etc.
• Cost & Timing : Fast responses and less expensive
• Idea Generation : New ideas on the topics or products
• Evaluation of Message Concept: Messages in some rough, pre-production form are presented to potential target audience groups for evaluation and refinement.
• Problem Identification and definition: Generate hypotheses and quick reading before planning a quantitative study
